Dialogue is the foundation of peaceful collective life in the contemporary modern world. Within the religious and interreligious lifeworld as well, dialogue constitutes the basis of peaceful religiosity. The foundation of a peaceful religious dialogue is also tolerance–understanding–agreement; which itself is a socio-cultural institution and the product of the history, culture, and society in which this process is to be realized. In other words, religious dialogues—interreligious, intrareligious, and extrareligious—arise from the interaction and tension between text and context. In this regard, the mode of reading and interpreting sacred texts (including the Qurʾān) can contribute, from cognitive and doctrinal perspectives, to understanding these dialogues. The problem addressed in this article is likewise the hermeneutical understanding of interreligious, intrareligious, extrareligious, and inter-sectarian religious dialogues within the contemporary Islamic lifeworld, with reference to the text of the Qurʾān. By posing the following guiding key question—“How is the culture of foundational dialogue in the Qurʾān formulated, and upon what social context does it take shape?”—this article seeks to provide text-based responses accompanied by their hermeneutical interpretation. Accordingly, for this purpose, the methods of “religious and theological hermeneutics” and the “sociology of theology theory” have been employed, as appropriate to the discussion, in order to analyze the responses.

Habib Nuh, the grand saint of Singapore, is a focus of pilgrimage for both Singaporean Muslims and Muslim tourists. Part of an older and more widespread belief in Muslim saints, the tomb of Habib Nuh is a site of memory and memorialization. Due to the small minority of Muslims in Singapore, it stands as a testament to the survival of Malay Singaporeans, Sufism, and sainthood in the small island nation state. This article explores the history, survival, and religious traditions surrounding the tomb of Habib Nuh.

In this paper, I intend to examine the Qurʾān's description of the Kaʿba as the most sacred shrine for Muslims. In other words, I aim to identify the characteristics that the Qurʾān attributes to the Kaʿba, which emphasize its sacredness. To this end, I first analyze the Qurʾānic names that refer directly to the Kaʿba, as well as those referring to al-Masjid al-Ḥarām—the mosque at whose center the Kaʿba is located—and to Mecca, the city in which al-Masjid al-Ḥarām stands. I then show how these names reflect the Kaʿba’s sacredness. In the next step, I discuss the relevant Qurʾānic verses concerning the Kaʿba to show how their content affirms its sacredness and what specific attributes they ascribe to it. Based on these two lines of examination, I conclude that the Qurʾān introduces the Kaʿba not merely as a sacred place, but also as the most sacred one.

Certain models of Christian theology can facilitate interreligious dialogue. A prominent and significant model is narrative theology, distinctively presented by the Yale and Chicago schools. The core emphasis of this theology rests on narrative and narrative forms as means for articulating the stories within sacred texts. Scholars associated with these schools frequently draw upon the insights of philosophers and literary theorists such as Paul Ricoeur and Erich Auerbach.<br />David Tracy, a leading theologian of the Chicago school, leveraging Ricoeur's concept of narrative, has endeavored to systematize a credible theology within the modern world. To this end, he elucidates two fundamental sources of theology: common human experience and language and the Christian texts, presenting a metaphysical method based on human encounter with the sacred text. His method is founded on the inherently narrative quality of human experience. In this sense, Tracy’s theological method of mutually critical correlation between Christian texts and the construction of lived narratives formed our being in the world.<br /> Tracy’s narrative theology, centering on the stories of religions and the necessity of mutual attunement among adherents, yields the following effects: the fostering of mutual understanding and empathy, mutual correlation learning and growth, reflection on one's own religious beliefs through the beliefs of other religions, the recognition of diversity within a religious tradition, respect for the beliefs of other religions, respect for mystery and ambiguity which are part of religious experiences, and the establishment and deepening of relationships. Beyond its significance for interreligious dialogue, this theological model also provides a fruitful framework for a theology of pilgrimage. From this perspective, pilgrimage is understood not merely as a set of religious rituals, but as the narrative of a lived experience in which the pilgrim's inner and outer journey is shaped through engagement with sacred texts, continually recreating meaning within one's present existence. Furthermore, pilgrimage may be conceived as a multidimensional space of dialogue involving the pilgrim, sacred texts, sacred places, religious tradition, fellow pilgrims, and even members of other religious traditions. Drawing upon Tracy's concept of <em>analogical imagination</em> and the notion of the <em>fragment-event</em>, such encounters make possible the recognition of similarities within differences and foster an authentic encounter with the religious other. Moreover, pilgrimage, as a fragment-event of being situated in a sacred place, constitutes a dynamic process of self-encounter in which pilgrims, through rereading sacred narratives and recounting their own lived experiences, continually reinterpret and reconstruct their personal and communal identities.

This article aims to elucidate the components of a transcendent livelihood at the individual level from the perspective of Imam Reza (Ali ibn Musa al-Rida), examining a distinctive livelihood model. Fundamentally, this model differs from prevalent materialistic models based on individualism, profit maximization, and destructive competition. This distinction is manifested in its ontological foundations (the human being as God’s vicegerent), teleological foundations (the ultimate goal of perfection rather than the accumulation of wealth), and methodological foundations (the primacy of cooperation rather than competition). An examination of narrations transmitted from Ali ibn Musa al-Rida (peace be upon him) led to the identification of several key components and distinguishing features of this livelihood model. Within the Razavi intellectual framework, livelihood management is undertaken not merely to satisfy needs but also as a means of realizing individual growth and perfection, with a comprehensive approach to all dimensions of human existence. This attention to the various dimensions of human existence places the economy at the service of ethics and spirituality and regards the provision of material well-being and lawful pleasure as a means of enhancing an individual’s capacity for spiritual pursuits. Furthermore, livelihood should provide a context for self-actualization and individual development rather than being merely a routine and repetitive daily activity. From the perspective of social interactions, a transcendent livelihood is founded on cooperation, empathy, and mutual assistance, and individual economic activity should contribute to the welfare and flourishing of society as well. In addition, the transcendent livelihood model defines a specific level of social responsibility, encompassing concern for society and nature, which effectively controls the negative externalities of economic activity through endogenous and ethical mechanisms. Accordingly, the Razavi model of a transcendent livelihood can be understood as a comprehensive intellectual and practical framework for individuals and society that has the potential to address crises arising from the gap between spiritual values and economic activities.

At the dawn of Islam, the prevailing art was eclectic, largely influenced by Byzantine and Persian art. Over time, however, it acquired distinct characteristics that are now referred to as Islamic art. A study of the Qur'an, the Sirah (the biography and conduct of the Prophet), and the sayings of the Prophet (PBUH) shows that "beauty" in its general sense and "art" in its specific sense play a significant role in the text of the Holy Qur'an and in the Messenger's Sirah, and neither is overlooked. This article seeks to determine the point of connection between the noble Messenger of Islam and art, and in doing so examines two forms of art: music and calligraphy. We explore these two subjects within the Prophet's personal conduct, temperament, guidance, and way of life, and analyze the influence of his Sirah on these two arts. We begin by offering an account of the concept of Islamic art, so that the reader becomes aware of its various definitions and understands that there is no uniformity or consensus among scholars in this field regarding the concept of Islamic art and its origins. We then present details of the Prophet's views and sayings concerning the art of calligraphy, and examine the influence of his Sirah on that art, including Hilye writing (the calligraphic depiction of the Prophet's physical and moral attributes). We then explore the Prophet's hadiths, conduct, and character concerning music. This research was carried out using a descriptive-analytical method, drawing on library and documentary sources. Given the sensitivity of the subject, primary and well-known sources have been used as far as possible, and tafsir bi al-ra'y (i.e., personal interpretation) has been avoided as much as possible in the descriptions.
